We are happy to announce that Persatuan Kebajikan Arutperunjothi Markam (PKAM) successfully hosted its 1st Annual PKAM Valentines' Games. It was held on Saturday, 25 February 2012 at K-Club Taman Melawati.

This Fund Raising Games event was for the various charity programmes that PKAM runs throughout the year.

Teams that  participated contributed RM1,000 as participation fees for all the games which included badminton, volleyball, futsal and pool.

Following the theme Valentine's, the event was a family affair. Ladies participated in some of the games. For the kids we had Mr Ganesh Asirvatham, who is the former world No.1 and runner up at the World Scrabble Championship, conduct a Scrabble Clinic and a simultaneous Scrabble Exhibition for everyone.

Food and beverage (non-alcohol) were provided during the games and winning teams took home all sorts of wonderful prizes.

A commemorative souvenir book was released in conjunction with the Games. The book gave an opportunity for advertisers to contribute toward the charitable causes of PKAM. We deeply appreciate the individuals and corporate sponsors who supported PKAM to make this inaugural PKAM Valentines' Games a success. Volunteer Programmes / Activities

PKAM's volunteers carry out activities at Rumah Sejahtera Jenjarom Old Folks Home every fortnightly. These activities include:
· Cleaning, tidying and sweeping the home
· Scrubbing the toilets
· Providing hair cuts
· Bathing the inmates

Sadhana Visionary Academy

In its dedication to uplift the disadvantaged youth in our community, PKAM has embarked on a bold and pioneer project to create a school for high-achieving but financially or otherwise challenged students. The students who benefit from the Academy’s full room, board and education scholarship are from Tamil schools. Students for SVA enrollment are selected based on their performance in the nation-wide UPSR (Malaysian Primary School Assessments) examinations or an equivalent assessment. SVA’s principal goal is to help such students maintain their academic excellence and help them achieve their professional dreams.

SVA has created a boarding facility to house the students. A live-in caregiver oversees the well-being of the students and to ensure that their daily needs are met. SVA runs an international school curriculum that is based on the national curriculums of Singapore, Malaysia and India. Through technological collaboration SVA’s curriculum and programmes are ratified and certified by a legitimate high school in the USA. SVA’s education programme also provides its students with hands-on values based learning, Hindu studies and service-oriented leadership. SVA was launched in January 2010 with an intake of four students from rural Tamil schools. As of the end of 2011 it has successfully completed two years of service and is now ready to increase its intake of students.

Tuition Fee Programme

The objective of this programme is to provide safe environments and support for students who have performed well in their UPSR exams to thrive and grow during their secondary school years. PKAM sponsors students to attend tuition classes over the weekends at Sri Setia Institute in Seremban and also provides some students with home tuition. This is to enable them to maintain their academic excellence during the formative years of their lives.

Education Aid Programme

Education is one of the simplest ways to reduce if not eliminate poverty. Therefore the objective of this programme is to support financially challenged Tamil schools. PKAM provides education aid to these schools via workbooks and photocopy papers. SJK(T) Ladang Lengeng and SJK(T) Ladang Kirby from Negeri Sembilan benefited from this education charity in 2011. PKAM also provided four whiteboards to SJK(T) Ladang Kirby to help the teachers teach more efficiently.

School Going Transport Programme

One of the biggest problem faced by the poor students living in the Mantin vicinity is difficulty in obtaining transport to their school SJK(T) Ladang Lenggeng, Negeri Sembilan. PKAM makes a monthly contribution of RM600 to facilitate transport for these students in a safe and cost effective way. The financial aid is given to the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) which oversees this effort. The students are now able to rely on getting to school on time and returning home safely.

Deepavali Hamper Programme

A total of 204 Deepavali hampers were distributed to families and 142 mini hampers were distributed to students. The recipients of this joyous welfare programme included the families under PKAM's Food-Aid Programme, and also families receiving Food Aid from the following societies; Persatauan Kebajikan Vivekananda Margam Selangor, Pertubuhan Kebajikan Vallalar Narpani Mandram PJ and Pertubuhan Kebajikan Vallalar, Hutan Melintang, Perak. Mini hampers were given to students from SJK(T) Ladang Lenggeng and SMK Dato Klana Lenggeng located in Negeri Sembilan and also SJK(T) Ladang Highland, Klang. In 2011 PKAM also sponsored the food for female Indian inmates of Kajang Prison as part of this effort to spread the cheer of Deepavali to all.

Food-Aid Programme

Food Aid Programme

The food-aid programme is the core charity activity for PKAM and this monthly outreach programme now operates in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan. Food provisions (valued at about RM110 per family) are distributed to about 100 families. The families who are vetted for the aid mainly consist of single parents or physically disabled parents with families. Also included in the
Food-Aid Programme are 17 indigenous (orang-asli) families in the Bukit Kemendul area, near Banting, Selangor who are given aid every other month. PKAM also administers this programme to two Tamil Schools in Negeri Sembilan and two orphanages in Selangor. In 2011 PKAM started Special Milk Aid. The are presently two boys who are receiving Pediasure Milk every month in this special aid programme. Both of them are bed ridden and are dependent on this milk for growth
